Solution
A vertical string, suspended from a fixed point and having a small mass attached to the free end is set into oscillations. Which of the following statements about the system are correct? i. The potential energy of the mass is a minimum at the middle of the swing ii. Its kinetic energy is a maximum at the middle of the swing iii. The sum of the potential and kinetic energies is constant throughout the swing
A
i,ii and iii
B
i and ii only
C
ii and iii only
D

medium Difficulty
Verified Correct Answer: Option A
Physical Principles & Numerical Solution
Potential energy is minimum at the middle of the swing, where the mass is at its lowest point, Kinetic energy is maximum at the middle of the swing due to the highest speed. Lastly, the total mechanical energy remains constant throughout the swing, as energy converts between potential and kinetic forms.

Solution
Which of the following sources of energy is/are exhausible? i. Solar ii. Fossil fuels iii. Tidal power
A
ii, and iii
B
i and ii only
C
i and iii only
D
ii only
medium Difficulty
Verified Correct Answer: Option D
Physical Principles & Numerical Solution
Exhaustible energy sources are those that are finite and will eventually run out. Fossil fuels, such as coal, oil, and natural gas, are examples of exhaustible energy sources because they take millions of years to form. On the other hand, solar energy and tidal power are renewable energy sources because they are replenished naturally and regularly. Therefore, only statement II is correct.

C
227 and 91
D
92 and 238
medium Difficulty
Verified Correct Answer: Option C
Physical Principles & Numerical Solution
- Alpha radiation consists of helium- He\(^{4}_{2}\)
2 Alpha decay --> 2 X He\(^{4}_{2}\) = Element\(^{8}_{4}\)
- Beta particles are high energy electrons- e\(^{0}_{-1}\)
3 Beta particles --> 3 X e\(^{0}_{-1}\) = Element\(^{0}_{-3}\)
- Gamma rays are waves of electromagnetic energy, or photons.
the mass and atomic number of the resulting element = U\(^{235}_{92}\) - Elements( \(^{8}_{4}\) + \(^{0}_{-3}\) )

(ii) Sketch a velocity-time graph for the motion.
medium Difficulty
Verified Correct Answer: Option
Physical Principles & Numerical Solution
Perfectly Elastic
Perfectly Inelastic
K.E. is conserved
Colliding objects do not stick together after collision
In case of head-on collision directions of the bodies are reversed
K.E. decreases
Colliding objects stick and move together after collision
Direction of both bodies may or may not be reserved
(b)
(c)(i) Stage 1; S = ut + \(\frac{1}{2}at^2\)
= 120 = 0 x 12 + \(\frac{1}{2}\) x a x 12\(^2\)
a = \(\frac{5}{3}\)
\(V_1 = u + at\)
= 20 + \(\frac{5}{6} \times 12 = 30m/s\)
Stage 3; S = ut + \(\frac{1}{2}\) at\(^2\)
-180 = 30 x 12v + \(\frac{1}{2}\) x a x 12\(^2\)
a = \(\frac{-5}{2}\)
V\(_3\) = u + at = 30 + \(\frac{-5}{2}\) x 12 = 0m/s
(ii) v/m\(^{s - 1}\)

(b) List three factors which affect the rate of evaporation of water in a pond.

(d) Two vertical capillary tubes of the same diameter are lowered into beakers situated at the same level, containing liquids A and B of densities 9.2 x 10\(^2\) kgm\(^{-3}\) and 1.30 x 10\(^3\) kgm\(^{-3}\) respectively. A suction pump is used to withdraw air from the top of the liquid columns in the tubes by means of a T-piece arrangement until the liquid in A rises to a height of 26.0 cm. Calculate the height of the liquid in tube B.
medium Difficulty
Verified Correct Answer: Option
Physical Principles & Numerical Solution
(a)(i) Inertia is the reluctance of a body to move if it is at rest or to stop if it is in motion. The more the mass of a body has the greater the inertia.
(ii) Inertial mass represents resistance to any type of force. The more mass a body has the more force required to give it an acceleration. Force = mass x acceleration.
(b)Factors that affect the rate of evaporation are: Wind, pressure, temperature, area of surface exposed, humidity or dryness of air.
(c) Ice melts when sufficient pressure is applied to it, because increase in pressure lowers the melting point of ice. When the two ice cubes are pressed together the melting point is lowered, hence they melt to form thin layer of water between them. On releasing the pressure the water formed freezes because decrease in pressure raises the freezing point. Therefore the two cubes stick together.
(d)h\(_A\)e\(_A\) = \(h_Be_B\)
\(h_B = \frac{h_Ae_A}{e_B} = \frac{26 \times 0.92 \times 10^3}{1.30 \times 10^3}\)
= 18.4 cm
